Packing smart isn’t just about saving space — it’s about saving time, stress, and even money. Here’s a streamlined guide to help you pack like a pro:

1. Plan Before You Pack
- Make a checklist: Avoid overpacking by listing essentials based on your itinerary and weather.
- Pack by outfit: Choose versatile pieces that mix and match. Stick to a color palette. Consider the type of shoes you will need based on your destinations and activities. 3 pairs or fewer for a trip. If you are traveling to the beach you may want a pair of sandals and a pair of shoes for dinner. If you are heading out to the city and plan on walking a lot you may need a pair of sneakers. Just keep in mind that when picking shoes pack shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits, such as neutral colors and versatile styles.
- Also consider the 5-4-3-2-1 method. It provides a structured, streamline packing list. It involves packing five tops, four bottoms, three accessories (such as scarves or belts), two pairs of shoes, and one outer layer (like a jacket or sweater) This works well for trips lasting around a week or less, depending on the variety of activities and climate at your destination.
2. Use Packing Cubes or Compression Bags
- Packing cubes keep items organized by category (tops, bottoms, underwear, etc.). SHOP ITEMS
- Compression bags are great for bulky items like jackets or sweaters. I swear by these! I bought the bags that come with a handheld pump. I take an extra medium/large bag with me for dirty clothes on the way home. I found that the compression bags that you have to roll and let out the air yourself always open and you can never get enough air out of them!!
- Also consider mailing items prior to getting to your destination. If you are renting a home, contact the owner and ask if you can have a box delivered to the house. If traveling to see family, pack a box (use compression bags) and mail it down. It can cost you $30 each way, but saves so much money on paying for extra luggage!!

3. Roll, Don’t Fold
- Rolling clothes saves space and reduces wrinkles. Use the “ranger roll” technique for max efficiency. This is where packing cubes come in handy!! I like to roll underwear, bras, socks and use a small cube.
- Save luggage space by wearing your bulkiest shoes and jacket on the plane. This will also eliminate the need for a blanket on the plane if you should get chilly.
4. Use Every Nook and Cranny
- Stuff socks, belts, and chargers into shoes or corners.
- Use the inside of hats or bras for small items.
5. Limit Toiletries
- Use travel-sized containers. If traveling in the US waiting until you reach your destination and going to the closest store (if you are not renting a car) and picking up all your toiletries. This will save room in your luggage and not weigh your luggage down. If traveling outside the US and you are checking a bag, see these items to safeguard your clothing SHOP ITEMS
- Check if your accommodation provides basics like shampoo and soap.
6. Pack a Personal Item Wisely
- Use a backpack or tote as your personal item. SHOP ITEMS
- Include essentials: passport, wallet, phone, charger, snacks, a book, and a change of clothes.
7. Weigh Your Bag
- Avoid overweight fees by weighing your luggage at home.
- Consider a digital luggage scale — small investment, big savings. SHOP ITEMS
8. Leave Room for Souvenirs
- Don’t pack your bag to the brim. Leave space for things you might buy on your trip.
9. Use a Packing List
- You can download and print one that is specific with your destination. It can help you stay organized and avoid forgetting anything.
